HOUSTON, Texas – Michael Mills to the Mills Racing BMW Z4 GT3 to a second and third place finish at last weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge season opener in Austin, Texas.
Kicking off the 2016 season at the home-state track of Circuit of the Americas was a motivating factor for the team going in to the event.
“We felt like we had an advantage being it was our home event,” Sydney Yagel, Team Manager said. “It calmed the first race jitters and allowed us to focus on a podium finish.”
Mills had a strong first race battling with Wright Motorsports’ Michael Schein for second in GTA. He was able to pull away and gap Schein during the mid-point of the race. Mills managed his pace and was able to hold off Schein to take the second step on the podium behind Martin Fuentes.
The second race was marred by a lap one incident in the climb to turn one.
“I got held up a bit on the restart by the one of the RealTime cars,” Michael said. “The setback put me behind Schein, but I put my head down and drove.”
Once the race was restarted, Mills made his way through the GTA field passing Schein and battling with GT driver Duncan Ende for the overall 15th position. Fuentes once again took the win, while 2015 GTA Champion Frankie Montecalvo finished second.
“Overall it was a fun race weekend, and I’m glad to be back in a car,” Michael said. “It’s really nice to be with family and in a BMW this year. BMW Motorsports has been very supportive as well as Mark Wilkins at Stratum BMW. I can’t thank everybody enough for the support, and I’m happy to have put the car on the podium after being away from racing after a year and a half.”
“We are very proud of Michael,” Mickey Mills, Team Owner. “We achieved our goals for the first race weekend by finishing on the podium. We chose the BMW Z4 GT3 because of our success with the M3, and this weekend proved to continue that tradition.”
Up next, the team will turn the car over to Mickey for the upcoming SCCA Majors event at MSR Houston at the end of April.
Stay tuned for exciting Mills Racing news coming out in early April.
